These resources impress me because they are effective, and they’re free.ĭisclosure: I received compensation for this post. I’m really excited about two great typing resources I’ve had the opportunity to check out. It can be a little overwhelming to evaluate all of the options and to consider the cost of some of them. There are many options when you’re looking for a way for kids to learn and practice typing skills. And if you have a child who is a struggling writer anyway, that frustration with typing out what’s in their head is compounded when typing skills are lacking. It’s very frustrating for kids when their work takes much longer than anticipated because they struggled with hunting and pecking on a keyboard. Whether they’re turning in work online or using an interactive learning program, the ability to type accurately and swiftly is important. If you (or your child) work your way all the way through the 22 lessons in Type to Learn, you will learn to type.Even younger kids are relying on typing more and more for schoolwork that they’re completing. Type to Learn is best for a motivated student. Our kid testers lacking this interest, tended to stay at one level or "bail out" at the earliest possible opportunity. Type to Learn scores highly on this measure among children who are self-motivated to learn to type. Proxy Parent Value is SuperKids measure for how well a program holds a child's attention with limited parental support or intervention. The program does an excellent job of tracking up to 5 individuals' progress, with printable graphs and reports. Type to Learn introduces letters two at a time, and then drills them into the user's neural memory by repetition and integration with keys previously learned. "Practice, practice, practice." Not only is that the way to Carnegie Hall, it's apparently the only way to learn how to type. Use was relatively intuitive for our reviewers, after they discovered that navigation between features required going to the menu bar, and selecting "Window," then "Chose activity." We did note, however, that a full installation of the floppy disk version would require 30 MB of hard drive space, an amount not likely to be found on many CD-less machines. Our reviewers reported no problems in installing the CD version of Type to Learn on their PC's. Several, in fact, reported that they spent an "inordinate amount of time" in the "Blast-off" practice game after their kids had departed! (The games are analogous to real-world typing, in that errors require you to start over.) Type to Learn's games and speed drills can be "just as challenging for an adult learner, as for a youngster," according to our parent reviewers. Presented in a factual and straightforward manner, there are neither rewards nor chastisements for the user's efforts. Keyboard instruction makes use of simple hand and key animations, with audio instructions correcting mistakes and repeating directions. With each lesson, there are also corresponding practice games and speed building exercises. Twenty-two lessons illustrate everything from proper posture and hand position, to the correct finger selection for every key on the keyboard, including the dreaded numbers and punctuation. Their silhouette was very fitting for what we were trying to do and when we did the more stylized version of them, they’re basically a round ball of fluff. Although, as something of a zoology geek, I was always a big fan. Those birds are not very well known over here. You know, in the States, we’re three Americans. The original prototype was typing on keys. Yeah, well, that’s actually where the title of the game came from, our technical artist Grant. And we liked the idea that we wanted a bird that was flightless and small enough that it could be conceivable that they were typing on an oversized keybir. It was honestly the first thing that came to mind. Why specifically Kiwi birds? What was it about them that sort of fit what you had in mind for the game anyway in terms of rather than any other specific kind of birds anyway. Yeah, as civil servants, when they’re working in the office, there’s definitely health and safety sort of conditions that they they have to live up to. What kind of post office would hire Kiwi birds? Do they get paid? Where are they? What does the rest of this world look like? And that was how we came up with all this stuff that you see in the rest of the game.ĭoesn’t feel very sanitary as well to hire two Kiwi birds within a post office as well. And when we decided to develop KeyWe into a full game, we went back to that initial premise and started asking ourselves like, you know, trying to answer all the weird questions that it posed. In the initial prototype that we built that weekend was the to Kiwi birds typing on a keyboard to send telegrams and a vision of it being two players acting as if they were kind of the left and right hands of a keyboard. ![]() So yeah, that’s kind of where the idea came from. And we said, ‘Wow, that’s, that’s a powerful image’. And one of us drew a picture of a kiwi bird wearing a radio headset. And so they had to work a desk job instead. So we’re like, ‘Get transmission bird protagonists’.Īnd we’re just kind of sitting around in the gymnasium there where they were hosting it and thinking about ideas, and one of us, we liked the idea of postal birds who couldn’t fly. And one of the random modifiers that we took was that our game had to include a bird protagonist. We had 48 hours to make a game based on that prompt. They said interpret that however you want. And the theme for the event was they gave us the word transmission. So we did the Global Game Jam in Orlando. And we were working on game projects on the side outside of work. And we were working together at a military simulation company. Joel Davis: So we’re a small team, we’re a three-person team. PlayDiaries: First off, then, talk to me of that initial inspiration of how the idea for KeyWe sort of came about. ![]() ![]() ![]() Vienna is a freeware, open source RSS/ Atom newsreader for the Mac operating system. Understanding RSS Readers for Mac Price Tags ![]() ![]() ![]() I found this out just a few days before school began and the staff and I were at first frustrated that someone else had encroached on our turf. This year, announcements are handled through a new campus information system, which rendered our announcement broadcasts useless. After sorting my results for price, I stumbled on the Parrot V2. ![]() On a whim, I decided to search the B&H website to see what they had. My plan was to build one of these (which could be accomplished for around $30-$40) and purchase an inexpensive tablet and use that. I looked into various DIY options, and found several that would’ve rather cost-effective, but they all required the use of an iPad or similar tablet, which we didn’t have. It occurred to me that a teleprompter could solve some of those problems. This meant there wasn’t always a lot of time for the announcer to rehearse and many of the announcers (the students have opted to rotate this job) weren’t been able to quickly memorize the script. Typically, my multimedia editor wrote the script and recorded the broadcast in the same class (we’re on a block schedule). As the weeks went on, we made improvements, but one of the first issues I noticed was eye contact. We do not have any way to broadcast live in our building, and so we would record the announcements in advance and then I sent an email out to our faculty each week with a link to the current broadcast. Inspired by our school’s makerspace instructor who teaches a bias toward action, we launched the broadcast at the beginning of September. Our building has had issues with communication for years, and so the students have implemented a weekly announcement broadcast as a service to the school. At the time, I had one Student Media Production class of seven kids (this year we have 14 on staff) that is responsible for both our yearbook and our website (my program is fully converged). Last year my students added broadcast to our student media program. ![]() ![]() ![]() I must admit that Magic Lasso does look interesting. Perhaps the devs could offer discounts to users who purchased in the last 6 months or something, though I have no idea if Apple lets them implement such things or not. ![]() Having said all that, I can imagine a new user to 1Blocker being a mit miffed about having the old app be put on legacy status only a few months after paying for it. I figure $4.99 isn’t that bad, and it’s way better than some apps adopting the revolting subscription model (looking at you, Drafts) that simply overcharges (no, I’m not falling for that “cheaper than a cup of coffee excuse, tyvm) beyond belief. It also had the ability to allow me to add custom blocking “packages” for specific websites, along with the usual element blocking (still clunky, but probably as good as it can get on iOS) and whitelisting. The old version gave me decent iOS/Safari adblocking for more than 2 years. I’d gladly pay $5 for the 1Blocker X upgrade. If you are looking for an alternative, I would suggest going for Magic Lasso or FireFox Focus, both of which are available for free on the App Store. It’s paid and might be a bit on the expensive for several users, especially for those who still use the legacy version. The new version is definitely worthwhile if you are looking for a powerful native content blocker. They announced a new version rather “abruptly” without any prior notice. Moreover, some users who recently purchased the premium version complained that this update could have been shipped for the existing version instead of being implemented in a whole new app.Īs for the developers, they didn’t do a great job of interacting with the users either. Their main gripe is that the developers never pushed updates for the legacy version’s tracker list. Though 1Blocker X is a solid upgrade, the users didn’t take it kindly. They can help you identify which product is more popular and what people think of it. We are tracking product recommendations and mentions on Reddit, HackerNews and some other platforms. It has been mentiond 17 times since March 2021. The reason behind this is that Apple doesn’t allow auto-upgrades for apps by the same developer. Based on our record, 1Blocker seems to be more popular. Paid upgrades are considered normal, especially on the iOS App Store. But here the catch – you must pay $4.99 to switch to the new version. The developers behind 1Blocker recently teased a new improved version of their app.ĭubbed 1Blocker X, the advanced version of the old 1Blocker aims to bring better content blocking features to your Apple device. ![]() ![]() ![]() Since maintaining the tension is Black’s most popular choice at the highest levels, this clearly means that he has sufficient offsetting imbalances if he allows this activity. The primal version of the Debut was – to put it nicely – rather spartan. September 12th, 2022 ELAC, a leading global provider of high-performance speakers and electronics, today announced the Debut ConneX powered bookshelf speakers. Other changes can be seen on the speaker itself. Last but not least is the two-sided curved elongated bass reflex port, at the front this time, which should provide more dynamics in the bass reproduction. And if the previous Debut was already a lot more neutral then this has been further refined in the Reference series. In addition, the crossover has been completely re-examined to obtain an even flatter frequency range. This way resonances have to be kept to a minimum. ![]() The mid-driver has also stayed the same but is now mounted in a new aluminium chassis to ensure better interaction with the heavy magnet.
